BASICS OF BRICKWORK DETAILING

Water penetration and insufficient accommodation for movement are responsible for many of the problems encountered in masonry walls today. Water penetration resistance and movement control in brick veneer is the focus of this course. Brick veneer drainage wall principles are discussed in detail, as well as specification of materials for maximum water penetration resistance. All building materials expand and contract due to changes in temperature; some materials move with changes in moisture content. Primary causes of movement, including temperature, moisture, deflection and creep, as well as strategies for avoiding resulting masonry distress, such as construction, size, and spacing of vertical and horizontal movement joints are reviewed.

Learning Objectives

1. Design and select materials for optimum water penetration resistance.

2. Discuss efflorescence, cleaning and the use of clear coatings on masonry walls.

3. Review location, spacing and detailing recommendations for movement joints

4. Identify installation best practices that promote quality brickwork
